What’s your name, grade, and school? What are you learning at NCMACC right now?
My name is Eva Thayer, I’m a junior at Ruth Asawa SOTA. I am currently learning Chopin’s Ballade no. 3 and Gershwin’s piano concerto in F major.
How long have you been at NCMACC, and which instrument(s)/class(es) are you taking this semester?
I’ve been at NCMACC since I was 5, and I’m now 16 so for about 11 years. I have always and will continue taking piano lessons.
Favorite NCMACC moment so far—lesson, recital, teacher tip, or a funny memory?
In general some of my favorite parts of NCMACC are the connections I’ve made with the teachers, since I’ve been here for so long they’re good friends and it’s always fun to interact.
How does music fit into your week with school and activities? Any practice routine that works for you?
Since I currently attend an art school in the piano program, I’m able to practice at least 2 hours a day at school + 1 or 2 hours at home. I don’t currently have as many extracurricular activities as I used to have so I’m able to fit practice more comfortably into my schedule every day.
What’s one skill you’ve gained at NCMACC (focus, confidence, teamwork, time-management) that helps outside of music?
A skill that could help me outside of music that I’ve learned from NCMACC is probably organization and time management, since it is well prioritized in music, it has also helped in other academic situations.
What are you working toward this year (piece, exam, ensemble, performance)? How is NCMACC helping you get there?
This year I am currently working forward to participating in a concerto competition, and very soon, auditions for college. My teacher has helped me so much throughout this process, not only through guidance of the music, but also definitely organization and preparations, while juggling other pieces.
Any advice for younger NCMACC students—or for someone thinking about starting lessons?
I would advise younger students to really let themselves enjoy the music and to make it fun for themselves, and for those thinking of joining to absolutely do so. I’ve only studied with NCMACC, and I’ve been provided with such a good foundation and great connections.
