So enough literature says that a musically-trained child will, all other things being equal, be better with language. But what about that other subject on the standardized tests: Math?

A 1993 study from professor of psychology and neuroscientist Dr. Frances Rauscher determined that spatial IQ in human subjects went up 8 to 9 points after listening to Mozart for just ten minutes. To eliminate the possibility that such a boost was from factors like music enjoyment and appreciation (and thus emphasizing music’s cognitive-boosting ability), a follow-up study performed on non-human subjects showed that performance for a problem-solving task was much greater in subjects that listened to Mozart than those that didn’t. Namely, it was reported that:

“The Mozart group completed the maze test significantly more quickly and with fewer errors...”
